Summer Stock Sunday 2010 - Grand Finale

Sorry guys. In a fit of remarkably poor planning I planned to close out Summer Stock Sunday the week we're away on vacation in Holland without internet access. Oops. Classic Robin, isn't it? I'm nothing if not scatterbrained. Still loveable though I hope. We'll be back in a few days and I'll be around to see your final Summer Stock 2010 posts then. In the meantime just imagine me in cooler northern climes tooling around a museum or kayaking down a canal or something with a mug of cocoa in one hand and a pancake in the other (or more likely having both the cocoa and the pancakes stolen by the ravenous hordes otherwise known as my children). What? You don't sightsee that way?
.
.
Even though it's still hot as blazes here in the Holy Land the kids are back in school (well technically they're on Sukkot vacation, yes a vacation already, but work with me here), the Jewish holidays are nearly over (see Sukkot, above) and the nights are beginning to lose that unbearable humidity (notice I said starting too, as I write this on Wednesday night it's still like living in boiling pea soup out there. Yuck.). Even I can't hold onto summer forever though, much as I'd like to, and the time has come to concede that fall is well on its way, and with it the end of this year's edition of Summer Stock Sunday.

Thank you all for making Summer Stock 2010 a great one, what a treat it's been to share in all your summer fun! And remember, this isn't goodbye, Summer Stock will be back again in May, ready to let the good times roll again.

Wishing everyone the very best of years, and don't be strangers over the winter either. The coffee's hot, the company's good, and there's always another seat around the island.

Nearly time to get those jackets back out of the closet...

So long summer, see you next year.

Herding Cats

Herding cats is what it felt like trying to get this year's picture of all four grandchildren. My mother really, and I mean REALLY, wanted it so I picked up the gauntlet, grabbed my trusty camera and waded into the fray.

Many minutes and several hundred shots later I REALLY wanted a drink we finally got a keeper. (Well actually we got a fairly drab shot, but thanks to the miracle that is post-processing I was able to punch it up a bit and now it's more or less a keeper. It amazes me how many ridiculous ways four otherwise adorable children can screw up a simple photo.)

And now, with no further ado, may I present to you

*drumroll please*

The Grandchildren, August 2010

Summer Stock Sunday - Tel Aviv Graffitti

.
.
After the gravity of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, which ended at sundown today (Saturday) I thought a little levity would be in order - I stumbled across this whimsical street art on a building in South Tel Aviv during this summer's Worldwide Photowalk.

Only one more week of Summer Stock left after this one so get those summer shots in. Fall will be here in full force before we know it.

Visit Skywatch Friday for more skies from around the world.

And as Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, approaches a Gmar Hatima Tova to you all - may you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of health and joy, love and laughter.

Rubies for Tuesday

I haven't the faintest idea what kind of flowers these little red ones growing in a formal garden in Portsmouth, NH's Prescott Park are but I quite liked them, they remind me of strawberries.

*ding ding ding* - Ten points to Carletta who just identified this as a Strawberry Fields plant (see, it DOES look like strawberries!), or more officially a Gomphrena Haageana.

Click to enlarge. More rubies can be found here.

Summer Stock Sunday - Into the woods

.
.
We're at the tail end of a long Rosh Hashana holiday weekend here in Israel. Tomorrow everyone heads back to school and work and to add insult to injury the powers that be are forcing us to set our clocks back tonight, yet another reminder that summer is rapidly drawing to a close. Personally, I'd rather look at this shot taken on Doubletop Mountain and pretend it's still the height of summer. Only two more Summer Stocks to go after this one, play along now while you've still got the chance.

Since I'm actually posting this on Saturday, 9/11, please also take a few moments to remember all those killed on that terrible day nine years ago, and to remember that violence is never the answer, and terrorism neither legitimate nor forgivable.

You know you've been a folkie* a long time when...

Folkie = someone who listens to / plays folk music. This guy was the "mascot" of the Prescott Park Folk Festival in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was a riot, they kept moving him around all day long, positioning him in all sorts of different places doing different things. I love a festival organizer with a sense of humor, don't you?

More flashes of red can be seen over at Work of the Poet, where it's Ruby Tuesday time again.

Summer Stock Sunday - Black-Eyed Susans

.
.
We'll be taking Summer Stock through the end of September to give everyone a chance to share our late summer shots, and what says late summer in New England more than these Black-Eyed Susans?

And while you're here, don't forget to check out Together, my contribution to BlogHer's Gulf of Mexico Benefit Auction. (Go here for a better look at the piece, the resolution on ebay is awful and doesn't do it justice at all.) Not only will this gorgeous piece, printed directly on glass so no need to frame, look fabulous on your wall it's for a good cause too. The proceeds are all being donated to the Nature Conservancy to help with Gulf cleanup efforts.

The View from Doubletop Mountain - and my BlogHer Benefit Auction piece is open for bidding!

While we were in the States this summer Jay and I had the chance to sneak off to New Hampshire's White Mountains for a night, where an afternoon's hike to the summit yielded this gorgeous view. The highest peak off in the distance, with the top shrouded in clouds, is Mt. Washington, which has the dubious distinction of having the worst weather in the entire United States and some of the windiest weather in the world. It looks nice enough in this photo but the following day it was so socked in by weather that when Jay and I stood on the veranda of the Mount Washington Hotel (conveniently located right at the base of Mt. Washington) we couldn't even see the mountain!

Click to enlarge, and visit Skywatch Friday for more skies from around the world.

And a very exciting side note, Together, my contribution to the Blogher Gulf of Mexico Benefit Auction, is now live for bidding on ebay. The resolution on ebay is awful, not at all like the gorgeous piece the bidder will actually receive, so I've gone ahead and posted a copy here as well (go ahead, scroll down, I'll wait) so you can get a better idea of what it actually looks like.

The auction piece was specially printed on glass (wow!) by Fracture and everyone who saw it at the BlogHer Gala says it looks incredible. Click here to bid on it (remember, it's to benefit the Nature Conservancy and the Gulf of Mexico cleanup efforts, a really great cause!).

See, doesn't it look better here than on ebay? It would look even better hanging on your wall ;).
