Leaving on a jet plane

My notatallababyanymoresuddenlyhe's11 year old is at the airport as we speak, checking in for his flight to the US. It's his first time flying alone (Jay got permission to stay with him until he's at the gate, then the airline will escort him to NY, through customs, etc. there, then on to the NY-Boston shuttle until my parents meet him in Boston), he's practically vibrating he's so excited. On the agenda are one-on-one time with the grandparents, a week at sleepaway camp, and all sorts of other adventures before Maya and I join him later this month.

Gee, do you think he's happy about the idea? It's kind of hard to tell ;)...Seriously, he is SO ready for this, and his utter joy at getting to do it does a mama's heart good, even if we're going to miss him like crazy.

Having just finished some one-on-one time with my 8 year old grandson, I am glad your parents will have this special time, Robin. But wow, you are a brave mama.

Nisia tova, young man!

I'm thinking it will be a great experience for him, as he is so upbeat about it! Hard for the mom. My daughter (age 10) is away for the longest she has ever been. And probably having a blast, too (travel camp, this week at Niagara Falls).

Great for him, certainly. But I also understand your feelings & how you're going to miss him.

Holy CRAP! I can't imagine sending A (also 11) on a trans-atlantic flight alone. I can't imagine sending him anywhere alone. I'm kinda jealous. :o

Oh goodness, now THAT would be a trip to remember...

Leora, I'll bet your daughter is having a fabulous time - Niagara Falls would be a blast with a camp group :).

Your boy looks so excited that it must be easier for you to let him go on this adventure. I'm sure he will have a great time and will be well looked after on his travels. Thank you for visiting my blog - much appreciated.

A beautiful boy, and he actually looks older than his eleven years.
I'm sure he's been growing even more when you see him next time.
You are a brave and grown Mom too, you know, having the courage to letting go.

Wow! you are brave!
My 15 y/o is going off on Sunday for 3 weeks to his annual summer camp (but in Ireland) & was off on a train trip with friends, but a plane is a bit away just yet. However, his 2 older sisters are all over Europe this summer- Spain, UK, Serbia! It's a new era!
I'm sure he'll have a fantastic time! So lucky to have grandparents who are able to give one-on-one!

He's adorable, what a smile, looks like he can't wait to start his adventure! I get your feelings, my son went to camp every summer for 4 years, it sure was unbearably quiet.

That ear to ear smile says it all! What an amazing adventure for an eleven year old to go on. I'm sure he will remember this trip forever. Brave of you to let him go on his own though. I'm not sure I'd have the guts to do the same...

I'm sure this solo trip is much harder on the mama than the son... he looks so happy and you know he will have a wonderful time! Kudos to you and your husband for showing him that you believe he's up to the challenge of going on his own. I know you'll be counting down days 'til you join him. What a handsome man he is rapidly growing up to be! You have much to be proud of!

How exciting for everyone! Be sure to take a photo in the same location when you return. Then compare -- see if can discern the maturity leaking into the atmosphere around him!

He looks ecstatic! How are you holding up... sending your once upon a time baby off on his own.. i would be resisting the urge to hide in his luggage. :)
