Gaia's Cry

Can you hear her?

A keening cry
from time out of mind

Wounded, bleeding
Poisins seeping

My children, what have you done?

I sheltered you
nourished you

Built your homes
Filled your bellies

My children, what have you become?

Destroying
Raping
Killing

What once was good
and green
and growing

What walked
and swam
and flew

Look around you children

Polluted cities
Toxic rain
Forests destroyed
Waterways poisoned
Animals gone

Never to return

I ask you

Was it worth it?

The Writers Island prompt for this week is Earth. I started out trying to write a light, fluffy piece a la Douglass Adams about two beings from outter space discussing the mess that Earth had made of things, but this came instead.

  1. I wonder too what have we done, what do we continue to do to the earth? Will we see sense in time?

  2. Well, I like this a lot, so don't sweat skipping the Douglas Adams bit.

As for the subject matter itself, we were going to take a drive about an hour north and go investigate a State Forest, but decided it wasn't worth using the gas and polluting. So we stayed home.

  4. Yes, and we feel it today. I read this book 20% of students suffer from depersion. The devors rates are really high. It's bad.

  5. I like the voice used ~ it effectively convey the message that pierced to the heart. As what I've mentioned in one of the comments I wrote, we can't live fearing and now weeping. Why don't we just go out of our back yards and plant a tree. Perhaps that would make the differnce.

    I wish you well.

  6. You are echoing something that is running through my mind lately---what can I do to help stop the bleeding? Or, is it all too late?

  7. I see the earth crying when wind kicks up a dust storm. It is nice to hear other's opinions on this subject. This was very lyrical.

  10. A deep and thoughtful piece, but aren't we in danger of making things worse by feeding ourselves on a diet of negativity? Sometimes it's worth standing back and looking for the good in this world.

  11. For some perhaps, but not for me.

  12. I think sometimes... this earth cry is really our own cry, a mirror this planet, blue-green orb spinning through space...
