Back to the Beach

We took advantage of another beautifully warm and sunny weekend and a visiting Swedish houseguest (no, we didn't actually take advantage of the houseguest, we just took advantage of her being here to get out of the house and go somewhere) to head for the beach again yesterday. (Who are you Mother Nature and what have you done with January? Nevermind, whoever you are please don't go anywhere!)
.
This time we headed for Shefayim Beach, a bit further up the coast. Unlike Tel Aviv's built up coastline full of hotels, beachside cafes and bars and hawkers selling everything from ice creams to kites, Shefayim is utterly undeveloped and because of a relatively difficult access also a bit less crowded. It's also got tidepools to explore, shells (Maya decided they were radishes of all things and spent a great deal of time planting and watering a number of them. They must have planted radishes in school at some point because I don't buy them often enough for her to even know what one is, let alone how to grow it.) and apparently decent fishing. These three folks were fishing with poles but there was another man right behind them fishing with a net, and doing fairly well too judging by the number of fish flopping around in his basket.
.
Two magnificent weekends in a row, our luck is bound to run out soon. In the meantime though we're enjoying every glorious minute.
.
More monochrome shots from around the world can be found here. Go take a look.

  1. Your guest from the frozen North must have been in glory.

Even cold Jerusalem is supposed to have 26 degrees C today. The first almond tree is already blooming here.
    Mah yehiyeh?

Radish shells. Cute! Tidepools are kid paradise.

  2. This is magnificent, Robin. Reeks of a laid-back day on the beach in summer. Your contrast is wonderful as is your composition.

    I love it. Brava!!

  8. What a delightful shot! Sounds like a beach that would draw my attention in a heartbeat (I love tide pools). I wouldn't be fishing...I'd be planting radishes with Maya.

  10. She couldn't believe she was actually swimming here, while it was 15 below at home!

Liz, it's often colder inside my house than outside - I'm wearing a sweatshirt too today but yesterday I was sweating in a t-shirt.

  11. Beautiful photo! I think I've told you this before but I just never thought of Israel as a beach. My ignorance. A long-time friend of mine (from high school actually) has sent her daughter to visit Israel a few times. I couldn't believe it when she first told me. But she insisted she was safe and loved the climate. Seeing your photos, I know why!

  12. Your friend is right Sandy, the reality of day to day life in most of Israel is not the sensationalized soundbites you see on the nightly news, and yup, the climate's great :). I'll take beach days in January over blizzards any day.

  15. I am sure you know how cold it is here. At 2 AM when Fritz woke me to go out, it was just 1 degree(F)! We're having a heat wave now, it is up to 8 degrees! (F)

  17. Beautiful photo. I love the silhouette. Great composition. Yes it is very cold up here in the North, but it's also very beautiful. In my town, Gothenburg, we seldom have snow. But this year we got some and I'm delighted!

  18. Consider us lucky to be able to go the beach during the cold months of the North. I too live in the tropics and many of us spend the Christmas break on the beach. Love your photo, I can feel the enjoyment.

I hope to visit your part of the world someday.

  32. Sunshine while the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is freezing - must be nice for you.
Nice picture. It's uncanny, it could have been taken at Algoa Bay.

  33. This is a wonderful photo. It sure does capture the magic of the sea. What a great time. We all but lived on Long Island Sound when I was a kid, so your post brought some nice memories to the surface. Thanks.

  34. I love this picture, Robin! I wonder how it might have looked framed slightly differently - can you play with the framing? I suppose you can tweak anything, really...is this one on your photo blog? I'd like to know how you played with it!
