TT - Concerts I Went to in the 80's

Since my girlfriends and I just got back from seeing Joe Jackson tonight (Wednesday) what better topic could there be for this week's list. How many of these do you remember?

1. Yes - my very first "real" concert
2. Rush
3. Grateful Dead - up and down the east coast, too many times to count
4. Tom Petty
5. Bob Dylan - several times
6. Billy Joel
7. America
8. Meat Loaf - 3 times
9. Huey Lewis and the News
10. The Turtles - reunion tour
11. Whitesnake
12. The Monkees - reunion tour
13. Bruce Hornsby and the Range

There were probably more that I've forgotten. It was a lot easier to go to shows when you didn't have to spend your paycheck on things like a mortgage or electricity. Not to mention babysitters LOL.
Visit the Thursday Thirteen hub to see what everyone else is counting this week.

Joe Jackson is the name of one of my best friends, though I hardly think we are talking about the same person!

I recognize the obvious names here, though I have never been to a concert, unless you count an open-air free one. You have obviously been quite the concert goer over the years.

I used to be back when I lived in the States (and had no real responsibilities or financial obligations LOL). I don't go to nearly as many these days. Israel doesn't offer quite as many opportunities for English music as New York did, especially for the (non-pop, older) music that I like. Still, I enjoy going when I can. There's just an electricity to a live show that can't be matched.

Did you see all of these in Israel? I don't know why that would be surprising - just me being a retard again - shock me! ;) My first real concert - and only stadium concert - was also Yes! High Five Robin! :)

Happy TT!

No, they weren't in Israel Claudia. I was still living in the States back then.

I've seen others here, but obviously not as many groups make it over here.

What? No ShapeShifter???

Hee.

I was thinking about seeing Rush on the Grace Under Pressure tour, just last night. Weird timing.

I've seen Rush quite a few times since I grew up in their neck of the woods. I would have loved to see the Monkees LOL Happy T13!

Lucky, lucky you. First, hanging out with your friends. Second. Joe Jackson -- love his stuff!

Gotta love Tom Petty!

I remember the first time I played a Yes album at home. My mother was so bothered. "That's not YOU!" she said. She blamed a boy for ruining my taste. A boy was responsible, but I loved them!

Thanks for bringing back some fun memories.

I haveen't been to a concert. EVER! One day, I'll have to go. Celine Dion was here and when I knew, all the tickets were gone. Too late. So many artists are coming to Dubai for a concert so next time!!

I'm older than you, but my fav concerts were Leon Russell, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Rolling Stones, REO Speedwagon (shut up, lol) ...AC/DC, Metallica, and most of all David Bowie in the late 60's, before he "made it".

Lets hear it for Whitesnake!!! I loved the Monkees too but I never seen them in concert. Great list. Happy TT.

Did you see the Turtles and the Monkees separately or when they were part of the "Happy Together" tour? Either way, I would have loved to have seen both acts. Ironically, I was listening to "The Turtles 20 Greatest Hits" about 30 minutes ago.

Although I try to go to a concert at least once a year, it's not as easy on the wallet as it used to be. The last show I went to was The Police reunion this past summer.

And I just went to see a Duran Duran show at Madison Sq. Garden back in 1982. Your list tops all!

Beachboys, Peter Frampton, Santana, and recently... Moody Blues and Bob Dylan... a big hiatus between my youth and middle age!!!

I am so pathetically out of touch. I don't even know who Joe Jackson is, other than Shoeless Joe Jackson the legendary baseball player!

Both Malcolm. I went to the Happy Together tour, but the Monkees also came around again the following summer, I think with a few other bands. Weren't the Byrds with them on the Happy Together tour too?

I've seen both the Dead and Dylan a couple of times. I'm just starting to get back into concerts again now that my kids are older. I recently saw Kimya Dawson of Juno fame. I got a hug. That was very cool. Fun TT.

I haven't been a rock concert.

I haven't been to a real concert in forever...you've made me nostalgic for when I was in college in SFO, and the Fillmore was just down the street.

Besides Bob Dylan I don't know anybody but maybe they never came to Europe either.

Denise Patrick said...

I know a few of the groups/musicians mentioned, but not all. I suspect I'm just a little older than you and, therefore, when you were a teenager, I was beyond that and didn't listen to as much music.

Thanks for visiting my TT!

Thanks for responding to my question Robin. To the best of my knowledge, The Byrds weren't part of any of the Happy Together tours. Some of the other acts who were part of the tours were The Grass Roots, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, and The Buckinghams.

Darla said...

I'd have LIKED to go to almost all of those, does that count? I went to zero concerts in the 80s. *sigh*

Robin said...

I must have seen the Byrds separately then. There were all kinds of things on that summer with the 20th anniversary of the summer of love. I'd forgotten I'd seen Grass Roots. I love them - still have the cassette in the car(yes, cassette, it's an old car). I think Herman's Hermits were on one of those tours too. They're another fun one (I am Henry the Eighth I Am...).

I love Tom Petty!

I see several I like too.
Huey Lewis and the News played at my husband's HIGH SCHOOL, just before they became famous!

Thank you for coming by my new dessert blog.

You seem to like many of the ones I like too. :-) Haven't been to too many concerts though. Mostly just the ones at the park or county fair. Went to a Cowboy Festival once, and their authentic cowboy music and poetry (not country) was really amazing and so romantic.

I love the 80's musics! But I never been to any concerts...in all of my life.

I do remember Yes (but the most song I like was "Only of the Lonely Heart", Tom Petty (although I don't listen to his musics a lot), Bob Dylan (great musics!), Billy Joel ( love almost all of his songs), Meat Loaf (although the only song I like by him was "I Will Do Anything For Love", Huey Lewis and the News (I love most of his musics. I thought he was fun), Whitesnake and Monkee.

What a fun Thursday 13! Thanks for visiting my blog, I hope you come by again. Have a good day! :)

Hi! Happy TT!
Oh 80's concerts, off the top of my head:
Aerosmith
ACDC
Ozzy
The Firm
Loverboy
REO Speedwagon
Rod Stuart
I know there's alot more too...
Tonight (my 40th BDAY) a friend of mine was supposed to go see Styx n Def Leppard, but couldn't afford it! Tickets are outrageous now!

Rush! Woo! Yeah! Actually, a lot on your list are faves of mine. Yes to Yes, Tom Petty, America and The Monkees.

L D said...

I actually know eight of them . . . not bad considering that I was, um, 7 when the '80s ended!

myrtle beached whale said...

I also saw Yes, Billy Joel, America, Meat Loaf (3 Times), Huey Lewis, and Whitesnake. I was never a Deadhead (I don't smoke enough dope). Great list.

Cynthia said...

Meat Loaf has to be a great show...Love Paradise by the Dashboard Lights!

Carol Anne said...

oooo, can I add my list? Not nearly as cool as yours. Getting permission from my parents and a ride from someone was always difficult. By the time I was in college and those weren't an issue, the money was! Anyway:

ASIA (2x)
Men At Work
Brian Adams
U2
Tracy Chapman

There must have been others I'm not remembering, but I was a nerd for sure!
