WFMW Backwards Edition - Ammonia smell in shower?

Help! I've got a weird ammonia-type smell coming out of the drain in my shower. It seems to happen every few months and I'm able to get rid of it by pouring some drano in there, but using such toxic chemicals seems like overkill when the drain isn't clogged.

Anyone out there have any kinder, gentler solutions?

Check out this week's backwards edition of Works For Me Wednesday over at Rocks in my Dryer (which probably won't be up until several hours after this posts, so if you don't see it just try again later) to see what isn't working for everyone else. Who knows, you might just have the answer they're looking for.

Not sure if this will help but when I was a cook in the army, and we had the same problem I seem to remember pooring baking soda down the drain and then following it up with vinagar. It foamed up a lot and the smell went away.

Thanks Brad, I'm going to give that a try.

My husband has a septic company and they sell a bacteria called CCLS that we pour down the drains occasionally. It eats any "stuff" in the drains and gets rid of the smell.

I totally second the baking soda/vinegar.

Chase it with some water to wash any lingering acid out of the pipes.

Thanks for your comment on my blog!

I have a smell coming from my shower too and my husband never smells it! He thinks it's all in my mind. I'll try the vinegar/bs thing.

Robin,

I always use vinegar on the drains in my kitchen sink. I pour it in and let it sit for a while before running water. It seems to work for me.

PS Thanks for stopping by my blog and offering the tips for forgetfulness. I'll have to try the note on the front door! :)

Dawn left a very informative comment about the ammonia smell on the wrong post, so if you're here via google try the second comment on this post too.

PS In our case a little drano fixed it right up.

There are several drain cleaners to choose from which you could pick up and use them at regular intervals. Also there are many professional companies who go about the cleaning very well.
