Postcard from Tel Aviv

This shot I snapped on the beach in Tel Aviv earlier this month has a real "wish you were here" postcard-type feel to it, don't you think?

And before you all hate me too much - it really wasn't all that warm. The temperatures a few blocks away from the sea were lovely but right by the beach it was so windy that I was shivering in a sweater! Still better than snow and ice in my book though, so I'll take it :).

Anemones in the Forest

Now that the rain has finally arrived (and arrived again, and again, and again...) the Israeli countryside is again bursting into its full technicolor glory. What a beautiful change from the dried out browns of summer.

This field of anemones, with cyclamen and thistles sprinkled about as well, is blooming in a forest just a few minutes from my home and was the site of a delightful picnic Saturday afternoon (and good that we got it in when we did, it's been rainy and miserable ever since!).

Finally got a break in the rain

Finally! After nearly two solid weeks of wet, gray misery we finally saw that sun Israel is supposed to be known for. We took advantage of the beautiful weather to go out for ice cream and a walk around town. Not a bad way to spend a February weekend now, is it? (It's about dang time too, I do not react well to all this darkness, it's like a physical weight pressing down on my psyche, thank god the sun finally came out again.)

Sepia Skies over the Mount of the Beatitudes

When life gives you lemons, in this case in the form of dreadfully dusty, washed-out skies, what else can you do but make sepia-tinted lemonade?

This image of the back gate of the chapel on the Mount of the Beatitudes has been wallowing in my archives for a while now. I absolutely love the ornate ironwork on the gate, but the terribly washed out skies and the horrible jungle of overhead wires you'd have seen if I didn't just spend far too long painstakingly photoshopping them out, but let's keep that our little secret, shall we? just didn't wow me. Since rain and then a sick kid have conspired to keep me stuck in the house for days now though (not to mention that other little project I have going on) shooting new images hasn't been an option, so back into the archives it was and this little image is the one that got lucky.

What's been taking up a very large chunk of my time lately

.

Only one (but a very good one) of the very many (and very wordy!) textbooks and online sources I'm currently devouring

I'm not sure how many of you know this but in addition to developing a fine art photography business, raising a family, trying to keep everyone in clean laundry and keeping up with this blog I'm also a breastfeeding counselor and lead mother-to-mother breastfeeding support groups (that last one as a volunteer). This year it's finally time to step up to the big leagues and sit for the international lactation consultant board exam this summer. I'm in a major rush because the prerequisites will change in 2012 and I ran into a big snag when I realized that a substantial chunk of my already-accrued lactation education hours are just a few months too old and have expired! Instead of having plenty of time to get my application together I'm instead scrambling to retake a bunch of credits that I'd already done (and paid for) once already, and to have this all done by the earlybird deadline at the end of this month. (Since I have to pay to redo all these credits it would only add insult to injury to also have to also pay more for the application fee, so I'm really rushing to get it done in time.) Once I've got my application in I'll then turn my attention to the actual exam prep, but I'll be able to spread that out over a few more months. In the meantime I'm up to my eyeballs in anatomy, physiology and pathology as I focus my attention on those areas likely to present my biggest challenge. If I have to retake courses I want to get as much as I can out of them, not reinforce what I already know...

So far I'm managing to keep all the various balls I'm juggling up in the air but bear with me if a few appear to wobble every now and again. I'm making sure the shop (and of course my family) get top priority which means blogging and commenting may experience the occasional temporary slowdown.

At least my life is never boring, right?
