Headstand - or perhaps not

Clever! I remember years ago creating an animated gif of a kid throwing a basketball with my kids and another boy. Other than that, I've never really used them much.

The ammonia smell is likely rotting wood, probably under the shower in the subflooring or (hopefully not) the support rafters. It could be caused by a leak in the pipes or the drain, something might not be fitting as snug as it once was, or there could be a crack in the shower floor (is it fiberglass? plastic? Tile? Those all can crack and leak.) The intense smell after a shower indicates that fresh water is being poured on the rotted part, stirring up the air around it and redistributing the amonia vapors. Someone should check it out, for certain. You can do a little detective work on your own with a simple screwdriver and a flashlight. You can take up the drain cover in the bottom of the shower by unscrewing the plate. There is usually one or two screws that can be easily taken out (put them in a cup or dish or something so they don't fall down the drain!) The pipe underneath may be loose enough to move around, or there might be space around the edge where you can see. Look with your flashlight to see if you can detect any wet wood. Take note if the ammonia smell gets worse, too. While you're in there, you might want to check and see if the pipe is clogged and clean it. It couldn't hurt.
If that does not show you what you need to see, look around to see if you can find the access panel for the plumbing. There should be one on the back wall of the shower, probably back up against where the faucets/knobs are. Take that off and see if you can see the source of the rot smell that way.
I don't know if you own or rent, but unless you or your partner are B+ or better handy-persons, this really sounds like a job for a contractor.
After it is fixed, if the smell lingers, try a citrus-based cleanser, or some baking soda. I'd just tuck a box into the access panel space and leave it open there for a while. Letting air get in there will help, too. A mini fan might be a good idea.

Good luck.

Hey Robin, just wanted to let you know that you are the featured blogger for the Lonely Blogosphere and the AM travelers this week. Hope you get lots of visitors!

Hey thanks. That will be fun :).

Dawn, thank you for all that information. Since we don't have any wood in there (buildings here are made of concrete, and the shower is fairly new and all tile) I'm thinking that the "pipe is in fact clogged" explanation you mentioned is the likeliest culprit, especially since the smell actually goes away right after a shower and only comes back later. I sure hope that's it, because opening up any part of the floor or wall would mean major renovations! I'll try to clean the pipe out first. Someone on the other post recommended baking soda and vinegar. Would that work better or citrus cleanser do you think? I've got both. Can the citrus cleanser actually dissolve a clog if that's what it is?

That's a tricky picture. Doing the headstand and getting the shot. I don't know if I could do either.

I fear that is what I would look like if I attempted a headstand at this point in my life. Sad. What happened to the days of marathon headstands and full backyards worth of cart wheels?

So well done, Robin! that looks like fun.
