If onions make you cry...

Light a candle nearby before you start. The candle flame needs oxygen to burn, and so will suck in the onion fumes, leaving the air less toxic and less painful for your eyes. You'll probably still cry, but not as quickly and not as much. Once you've started cooking the onion you can blow the candle out.

Great tip! My mother said if I open my mouth while chopping the onions, I will not cry -- but the people around me will laugh to tears at the way I stupidly look!

Imagine chopping onions with mouth open wide!! But it did work!

Wearing glasses also helps to prevent some of the sulphuric acid fumes from getting in your eyes, and washing the onion in cold water is also a help!!

By the way, I tagged you for the book meme (if you have the time to play!) I know I still owe you one, and have started, but it keeps getting pushed down the list (sigh)!

I do make my husband chop them whenever I can, but he's not always around (the nerve!).

I'll try the mouth open thing, I have no pride anyway. I've tried the cold water (didn't help all that much) and I do wear glasses, but I think the lenses are small enough that they don't manage to block anything LOL.

Keep those tips coming, I need all the help I can get!

Thanks for the tip! I don't mind the crying, it is the nose running that drives me crazy--my whole face leaks when I cut onions up.

contact lenses. unless you're chopping a whole big bag of onions, they usually hold it off. the rest of the family is weepy but me, chopping away, no issue. guess i'll have to light a candle for the rest of them:-)

i've also found that if you keep your onions in the fridge, when you cut them they don't make you tear up. or i just buy frozen ones already chopped!

i'll have to try out the candle thing - great WFMW

I usually cut them under running water.
