Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire

.
We headed up to Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire's White Mountains with Jay's sister and her husband today. Since the folks at Cannon Mountain are thoughtful enough to run an 80-passenger tram up the mountain we were able to save our kids' legs our legs for a walk around the summit, which we followed up with lunch at a picnic table right over the edge. It was absolutely breathtaking, with views all the way to Vermont and Canada. After coming down the mountain we headed a few miles down the road to a waterfall-filled pool called the Basin before heading home again, where we're relaxing a bit before heading out to dinner. Speaking of which I need to quickly post these photos and go jump in the shower - I'm a mess!

Cannon Mountain! Great place. I remember skiing there in a sudden snowstorm many years ago, in beautiful thick snow that rivaled the snow of the West. I must have hiked it as a child. Thanks for reviving those memories.

I think the old man on the mountain must be near there somewhere.

Have you gone to Arethusa Falls? That's a great, short hike. A great long hike is the Falling Waters Trail.

The old man of the mountain was on Cannon Mountain Leora, but he fell off in the middle of the night in 2003! There's a group collecting private donations for a memorial to it which will have a metal silhouette sticking out from the rock face where the original "rock face" was (please excuse the bad puns, it was nearly impossible not to make them).

We haven't done much real hiking since our kids are still young for it, but we may while they're away in Florida. Or, we may just hang out on the beach and go canoeing. We'll see what the weather's like.

The white Mountains of New Hampshire are a marvelous place. Probably second favorite on my list. But I live on the coast of Maine (near Bar Harbor) and I favor the cool salt air of the ocean over the steamy sauna of inland mountain valleys. Next trip, take a detour to coastal Maine (north and east of Belfast for the good stuff). Good weather coming - you'll have plenty of beauty to enjoy. Do take a trip up Mount Washington if you can - by car is fun (but scary) by cog rail is gorgeous (but pricey) and I think there are vans that ferry people up and down as well. It is worth what it costs, trust me.

Thanks for all the great tips Dawn. I don't think we're going to make it over to the Maine coast this trip, but hopefully next time. We are hoping to get up to the top of Mt. Washington though. I've heard it's the windiest place on earth, but that the views are well worth it.
