Major computer disaster

My laptop is in the throes of catastrophic failure, and with it all my latest work files and the last round of photos I took (including my chrysanthemum *sob*). The files are in there, I can see them with the Rescue and Recovery program, but it won't let me get them out of the C drive.

I'm on a 9-year old pentium 3 desktop for now and trying to keep my stress over this from reaching atomic proportions as I deal with my company's IT department and their distinct lack of responsiveness.

In short, blogging is going to be a bit hit or miss for (oh god, please make it just) a little while as I (please oh please oh please) sort this out.

Between that and a devastating personal tragedy that has befallen a friend my priorities are elsewhere this week.

Robin, I'm really sorry about your friend. And your computer, but the computer will eventually be fixed.

Perspective shifts between circumstances. I hope that your computer woes are short lived. You will be missed in the meantime.

Gah! I hate that kind of thing. This is precisely why I recently got a USB hard drive to back up everything to. that way if my desktop crashes and burns, I plug the USB drive into my laptop and march on. Seagate makes a 500Gb model you can get for about $85 USD -- at least here in the States. I got mine at Target, but you might find them even cheaper elsewhere. Of course shipping overseas would probably negate that savings.

And anyway, devastating personal tragedies take priority over computer malfunctions. and most everything else too. My best to your friend.

I hate when that happens, and I hope things look up for your friend soon.

Sorry to hear about your friend. My thoughts are with you. Have you ever heard of Carbonite.com It's a great online back up. And also you might think of a portable drive :)

I already HAVE a portable hard drive where everything is backed up - everything except the last week, which had some critically important files that I hadn't had a chance to back up yet with all the holiday chaos. IBM tech support is fairly convinced that I will be able to recover the data, and truly all that is at risk is a week's worth, albeit an important week and no telling when my company will make that happen.

Oh this just stinks. I gathered from some of your Tweets that you got infected with spybot/ware .. say thank the computer gods the hard drive was not destroyed as one of mine here at the office was ... I got snared by some ads on a blog that participated in Sky Watch ... sigh

I hope your connectivity issues resolve with little difficulty.

I paused to say a prayer for your friend. I don't know he needs, but God does. Blessings for her - -and for you as your give your time and support.

Oh so sorry about your computer problems ... and feel for you. Am glad you back up regularly. Not everyone does. When my laptop crashed to the dreaded BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH this morning and the memory dump didn't work I panicked ... logged on in Safe Mode and did some quick back ups of recent 'stuph' onto an external drive then ran Malware Bytes and Combo Fix to sort things out. So far ... so good. I'm hoping you'll be able to access your files and save them to an external drive. I had a friend who lost ALL their 5 years of travel photos for the better part of a year but eventually found a way to retrieve them so hang in there. I'll pray for your friend ...
Hugs and blessings,

I am really sorry to hear about the laptop disaster. I hope you are able to recover as much as you can - I have been through this a few times (my macbook drives have a tendency to die just after the warranty runs out). Fortunately, I had most everything backed up.

Also sending thoughts for your friend with his/her personal tragedy.

I am here for you if need be.

So sorry to hear that! My husband's PC also died and took all his files to the grave. I hope you'll be able to recover your files again, Robin.

Your photos are simply too precious to go down the drain!

I can only offer meager words of comfort regarding your friend.

But regarding photos - I now one TWO external hard drives. And I can backup my photos online to my website, too, because I pay for unlimited space (and put them in a password-protected directory). Buy at least one external hard drive. They are only about $100. Worth the sanity.

I had the same problem recently - my computer was crashing - what I did was copy and paste all of my files into email documents so I could pull them up through email addresses that I set up. It is an odd way to deal with it but it worked for me.

I hope your computer issues are solved for you quickly.

Best regards,
Tom Bailey

My computer disaster was finally fixed, with no loss of files, thankfully! I hope yours is too and sooner rather than later.
