Who Me?

I'm not sure whether you'd call what this resident of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo is sitting in a door or a window but his expression as he was doing it cracked me up. (And since I know you're going to ask, no, this Black-Gold Howler Monkey is neither in the Bible nor native to this area - he's native to the rainforests of central South America. The "Biblical" section of the Zoo is just one exhibit, the rest has animals from all over the world.)

Arch and Olive

The knarled old olive tree you see through this arched window stands in the courtyard of the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and the Fishes in Tabgha, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

Inside the Church is a large rock, venerated since ancient times, that is believed to be the one upon which Jesus placed the bread and the fish when he fed the 5,000.

Jaffa Ironwork

A very happy Hannukah to all who are celebrating tonight. Our menorahs are ready and waiting, and our kids are not letting schoolwork (Itai) or a low-grade fever (Maya) get in the way of their anticipation.

I assume this decorative grating graced a doorway or window before it was installed in front of this bare cement wall as a purely decorative element. The beauty of Jaffa is often in these little unexpected touches though, you can never be quite sure what you'll see at the other end of your camera's lens.

Jaffa Arches

If you look carefully you'll see that these arches no longer have a roof over them but they still serve as doorways into a quiet, shaded corner of Old Jaffa. Just a few feet away an ancient olive press stands baking in the sun while here all is cool and inviting.

Tiny Windows

Actually, I'm not even sure the little holes on this old stone building across the peninsula from Howth (yes, Howth again, what can I say, it was incredibly photogenic) can be called windows, they're more like little air vents, but I figured they'd work in a pinch.
.
And if this isn't enough for you, I'm also over here today, and was interviewed here a good while back but completely forgot to post the link. It's all Robin all the time around here folks. You never know quite how or where I'm going to pop up, and of course if there's any doubt you can always find me over at the shop.

Window of a Sarona building awaiting renovation. Look closely, do you see what I see? Amazing, isn't it? And each one is unique, too.

Edited to give the answer since no one, including my own family, figured it out: The window is NOT REAL - it's a vinyl photograph covering up the gaping hole where the window used to be. Most of the windows on the buildings slated for renovation have them, but the cool thing is that they're all amazingly realistic, and they're all different from each other, just like they'd be if they were real.

Another one from Old Jaffa, you really can't go wrong there, wherever you point your camera. I love the way the turquoise pops against the stone, and the contrast between the rectangular stones and the angled lines of the shutters.

Jaffa really is a gold mine for window and door photos. So many choices, so little available light...
.
I am so totally overcommitted this week it's not even funny (if you see a crazed woman running around like a chicken with it's head cut off mumbling about cameras and photo competitions don't be alarmed, it's just me). I've been trying to keep up with comments on my blog but I'm falling sadly behind. I'll get there, it may just take me a bit longer than usual. Besides the usual chaos that is my day to day life I also need to start cooking and packing for a multi-family camping trip this weekend. We're finally going back to Ganei Huga and I can't wait! (And yes, I'm bringing my camera along again.)
.
Life will slow down a bit again next week. I think. I hope.
.
In the meantime what is it they say in that movie? Just keep swimming? That'll be me, kicking those legs of mine as fast as I can just to stay in place.
.
And if you'll permit me to be a bit of a pest a little while longer, have you starred my Artists Wanted portfolio yet today? Yes? Thanks! No? That's okay, there's still time to do it now :). (Look here if you have no idea what I'm talking about.)

Just to the left of the Campanile I showed you yesterday is this delightful building (which thanks to Heckety I now know is called the Graduate Memorial Building), also part of Dublin's Trinity College. I think I'd literally feel smarter studying history in a building that looked like that, wouldn't you?

Because things were getting too sticky sweet around here

Now don't get me wrong, I love beautiful photos of exotic animals as much as the next person, especially ones as sweet as this one or as wild looking as this one or this one, but lets face it, there have been a lot of animals around here lately. Too many animals. (Obviously my last big photo excursion was to the zoo. It was a great success imagewise but it's time for some variety. This city kid was starting to twitch. )
.
Enter the illustrious Mary the Teach to the rescue. She decided, and just in time, too, that her Window Views project can now include doors as well, and what do you know, I just happen to have a few of those kicking around in the ol' archives. I have plenty of windows too, but what can I say, I'm feeling the need to live on the edge a little - not a window, not even a door, but rather a doorframe - a mere fragment of a door. Because that rebellious make it my own streak is still alive and well around the old island. (Dear god I've gotten old if simply choosing a slightly off-centered photo is considered rebellion - what happened to all those late nights, sneaking out of my house to go get into whole heaps of trouble meet up with my friends? Now I'm content to rebel by posting an image of a doorframe. Sheesh. At least it's a slightly gritty, graffitied one. Maybe there's hope for me after all. (Then again, maybe not.) I think one day soon I'll have to play hooky and do another serious photowalk around Tel Aviv and feed the muse before she abandons me completely. Anyone want to join me?)
.
Though now that I look at it, even my supposed gritty door has a series of cute little hearts on it. Ack! I can't get away! The cute, it's winning! Send help! Send me locations of rusty metal, of rotting wood, of old junk, anything for a break from the cute. I'm doomed, doomed I tell you. Next thing you know my blog sidebar is going to fill up with sparkles and unicorns.

Dusty Window

Caught in Tel Aviv a while back

Forgive me if I'm slow answering comments lately, I'm actually reading a book! An actual book. With pages. A whole series of them in fact. I was looking for something to read about two weeks ago and on a whim decided to reread Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander (yes, of Russell Crowe fame, but the movie is actually drawn from a number of different volumes of the series, leading to some confusion as I reread them), but of course O'Brian cleverly ends each volume with the lead-in to the next installment in the series and before I knew it one thing had led to another and I'm now on the 13th book in the 21-volume series. Happily (but impractically) we already owned them all so there has been nothing to stop me from racing helter-skelter from one to the other. I remembered just enough from my first read years ago to entice me ahead, not enough to allow me the rest that comes from knowing what's ahead.

.

I so rarely take the time to completely immerse myself in a really good story these days, I'd forgotten how much I love it, and how overwhelmingly consuming it becomes.

.

So, what has consumed you lately? Where has your passion taken you?

Allenby Street Window

I love this second story window along Tel Aviv's Allenby Street with its cheeky little round balcony perched on top. Both the neighborhood and the building have clearly seen better days but I think that the structure has a lot of potential, if only someone would come along and give it the TLC it needs.
