TT #10 - Passover Edition

ImageChef.com - Create custom images

Passover is the Jewish holiday of freedom. It is a time when Jews the world over remember their redemption from slavery under Pharoah in Egypt. Today, Passover is not just a remembrance of past deliverance, but also a celebration of freedom in general and a chance to take stock and remember how very lucky we are to be living free today. In honor of Passover (which takes place from 4-9/4 this year) I give you a list of 13 types of freedom. Some are obvious while others we may take for granted. All are worth reflection.

Physical freedoms:
1. The ability to travel where you want
2. The ability to control your own body - sexually, reproductively and otherwise
3. The ability to do what you want
4. The ability to be safe in your daily life

Spiritual freedom:
5. The privilege of being able to openly express your thoughts
6. The privilege of being able to live according to your own inner compass

State freedom
7. The ability to live free in your own land
8. The ability to live under a government of your choosing

Freedom of religion
9. The ability to live according to your own creed
10. The ability to change this creed should you so choose
11. The ability to disregard this creed should you so choose

Individual freedom
12. The ability to love and marry someone of your own choosing, regardless of race, religion, creed or gender
13. The ability to engage in the profession of your choice

I really hadn't thought before about that aspect of Passover. It's a powerful reminder of how much we take for granted here in the 21st.

I was thinking at the gym this morning that there'd be more Easter TTs than Passover ones, and wasn't that a shame. I'm glad you did a Passover TT today, Robin.

And so dead-on right. That really hit home with me today.

Have a great rest of Passover! I still need to bake those darn cookies!!!

Mazal Tov!

Great list. Folks especially should pay attention to #9. It applies to all people of all religions not just christians.

I think I would say

#14 - The freedom to be under authority.

If we get too excited about being free, we forget that we are, at our core, under the direction and guidance of a higher power. Passover was so that the Jews would remember that they could not do everything themselves. They needed the hand of God to protect and guide them.

Mahalo for visiting my blog! It's so funny you write about Freedom today because this is important to me, and yesterday we FINALLY got our beautiful art titled "Freedom" from the gallery where we purchased it. It's framed in Koa wood. I'm going to post about it tomorrow and the saga of acquiring this special piece of art. Of course, nothing beats the real thing!

Freedom; as precious as it is, it's very easy to loose. BTW, thanks for commenting on my TT13!

Reading that list makes me want to celebrate, and I'm not even Jewish. Thanks for reminding us of things we do indeed take for granted.

You know that's kind of what we do for our Easter dinner. We have lamb and dates and grape juice (though not completely authentic, I serve pita instead of unleavened bread) not so much to be authentic to the rites of Passover but more to turn our thoughts to the area of the world and culture where our own beliefs began. The kids love it, sometimes I serve things like persimmons or fresh figs, things that are native to the area. It makes it a lot more fun and seems a lot more authentic than an Easter ham :) (the irony!)

Speaking of Passover, we had a Messianic Jewish lady to sponsor a Passover Seder dinner at our church Tuesday night. It was such a great experience for all of us.
