Foot Update, for those that have been following along

I finally saw the orthopedist on Thursday. Apparently I have "high arch foot" and after nearly thirty-cough years of living with it it's decided it doesn't like me any more.

I am on ten days worth of oral steroids and have a referral for both 8 sessions of physical therapy and custom orthotics (which I have no intention of wearing until next fall - this is FLIP-FLOP season people!). He told me that they were preventative and that I "didn't have to wear them at home". Since I work from home that covers most of the day, then I can extrapolate kid-fetching and errand-running as "home-centered" activities. The steroids and PT better work, because we're heading into six months of soaring temperatures and there is no way in hell I'm wearing closed shoes every day for the next six months. Not gonna happen.

Feh!

I have high arches, but I was never treated with medication. I used to wear orthotics all year round but last summer I found I could survive with orthopedic sandals. Israel has a good selection of such shoes. Call me if you need more suggestions.

Thanks, I may very well do that if the steroids and p/t don't do the trick.

The steroids are just to fix the current pain, which I have to admit is pretty substantial and putting a major crimp in my daily activities.

I love my orthodics so much, I had a second pair made. Give them a chance before you reject them -- although they DO sort of push you into wearing a lot of athletic wear. Still, if you're gonna dress the part...

Robin, when you say orthopedist, do you mean Podiatrist? Is it someone on Maccabi? In the area? I was looking for someone earlier in the year and when I didn't find anyone my foot started feeling better. I decided to hang loose for a while, but it's good to know if you have a name in the area. thanks--susie
(and shoot me if i'm having a brain fart and we're NOT in the same area, but aren't we?)

What about flip flops that fit to your arch?

They don't really do podiatrists here Susie, there are only a handful in the whole country. You usually go to an ortho for this sort of thing.

(As an aside, they try to send you to a surgeon for ingrown toenails. A good cosmetologist is a MUCH better choice. Surgeons cut.)

Glad to hear you were able to get in to the doctor - I hope the steroids and the PT help and your foot is feeling better soon.

I've lots to catch up on here!

Your poor foot and the rest of you feeling it! I know that if you can get some relief then you can build on that and the pain will lessen... I struggle so when my body is out of health... I will not be remembered as one who suffered or endured physical discomfort with quiet composure...

Robin, thanks for the link for the crepe fillings. The steamed carrot and ginger sound really delish.

That's one thing I have also is high arches. Since I'm pretty short, and my EX was about 6 feet, I'd wear heels all the time, and now it hurts to wear them for even a little while. And working in restaurants, being on my feet all the time, unless I had extremely comfortable shoes, my poor feet would suffer.
If I wear flipflops they have to have lots of cushion.

I'm glad you were able to find out what was causing it.

I'm glad you got it figured out! I agree with what has been said already, I bet there are flip-flops out there that have some arch support in them. Good luck.

Daniel has a lot of problem with his feet from running, playing badminton and wears support thingies, but hasn't ever been given meds either, so you must be in a bad way. Big hugs,

Do you like Birkenstocks? My husband and I run a lot and we've had docs tell us to wear them because they have really good support. I have a pair that are like flip flops that I practically live in when the weather is warm. I also have had orthotics made for me, and I wear them in regular shoes. I hear ya though, summer is for flip flops! :)

I have high arches too. I am sorry that they are causing you problems but good thing you got it sorted out. I hear you on the flip-flops. I would dread closed toes in summer too! Those piggies need to breathe! Good luck with the treatment!

I LOVE to live in my sandals and totally hate when winter comes. It starts to get colder and I have to switch to closed shoes. They always seem so very tight to me.
